If you are planning your trip and wondering whether there is Uber in Cozumel, the practical answer is no: do not rely on this service to arrange your journeys. This guide brings together the options you can consider, their advantages and what to know before choosing, from a local perspective.
Update as of 20 October 2026
As of this date, Uber is still not operating in Cozumel. Uber beginning operations in Playa del Carmen on 20 October opens up the possibility that the platform could come to the island in the future. However, this should not be interpreted as confirmation or a launch date for Cozumel. For now, the recommendation is to organize your journeys using the options available on the island.
1. Taxis: available and practical, but not always inexpensive
Taxis are among the most widely used ways of getting around Cozumel. They are a convenient option if you do not want to drive or need an occasional transfer.
Their main disadvantage is the cost, especially if you plan to make several journeys during the day. Before getting in, confirm the total price and the currency you are being charged in. If you are going to a beach or somewhere out of the way, also arrange how you will get back.
For one or two journeys, a taxi can be practical. If you want to visit different parts of the island, compare the expense with renting a vehicle.
2. Mototaxis: a low-cost alternative within San Miguel
Mototaxis, similar to the vehicles known as tuk-tuks in other countries, are a relatively recent option on the island. For some journeys within San Miguel de Cozumel, they can be a fairly inexpensive alternative.
As a local indication, a journey may cost around 40 MXN. The price depends on the route, so it is worth confirming before you set off.
Their coverage has limits: do not count on them for getting around the whole tourist zone or for trips to beaches or the marina. Service restrictions also apply along the waterfront and in other tourist locations.
If you need to get around within San Miguel, they can be a good option. Always confirm that they can take you to your exact destination.
3. Scooter rental: freedom to explore, if you already know how to ride
Renting a motorcycle or scooter lets you set your own schedule and visit different parts of the island without relying on a taxi for every journey.
As an indication, you may find rentals for around 15 to 20 USD per 24 hours, although the price can vary depending on the agency, the season and what is included. Not all offers provide the same coverage: check the insurance, deposit and additional charges before comparing prices.
My recommendation is to choose this option only if you already have experience riding a motorcycle. A holiday is not the best time to learn. Wear a helmet, carry a valid license for the vehicle and check its condition before setting off.
4. Car rental: comfort for families and groups
If you are traveling with your family, with several friends or do not ride a motorcycle, renting a car may be the most comfortable option.
In Cozumel, you will find different types of vehicles, from compact cars to jeeps and buggies. Choose according to the number of passengers, your luggage and the route you want to take, not just the vehicle’s appearance.
Before booking, confirm the final price, the insurance included, the deposit and the pickup and return conditions.
Cozumel is not an island you can explore entirely on foot
One thing many visitors discover on arrival is that distances are greater than they imagined. Cozumel is much larger than Isla Mujeres or Holbox, and many beaches and places of interest are far from the center.
You can walk around some parts of San Miguel. But if you want to visit several beaches or explore other parts of the island, it is worth planning your transport.
Which transport option suits you?
- For exploring the center: walking may be enough.
- For inexpensive urban journeys: check mototaxi coverage.
- For occasional transfers without driving: consider a taxi.
- For independent exploring: a scooter if you have experience, or a car if you want more comfort.
My advice: choose your transport according to your plans, not just the price of a single journey. Knowing how long it will take, how much you will spend and how you will get back will help you enjoy Cozumel more.
